  • To keep them from getting a bad odor, place a fabric-softener sheet or two in the bottom, or toss in perfume strips. These will help. Put a plastic bag or liner to contain anything that might leak or drip on the bottom.

  • If garments smell bad, first hang them in the fresh air. Also, many fabric-odor sprays can do a good job and normal laundering should remove this odor.

  • Dampen a paper towel or piece of old bread with vinegar and put it into the lunchbox overnight. In the morning, wash it and dry. Leave the top open to let it air out.

  • Put them in the washer again by themselves, and use the high-water level. Add regular amount of detergent to the hot water, along with 1 cup of ammonia in the rinse cycle. Put them into the dryer ASAP. You may have to repeat this several times to get rid of the smell.

Socks Really Stinky?

  • Wash as you normally do, then rinse them in a mixture of 1/4 cup of white vinegar in one gallon of water. Allow them to soak for a while, then squeeze out extra water. Don't rinse; just dry.
